ICEWORKS HISTORY
Opened in 1926, Ithaca Ice Works operated on the same site for 70 years. The founders of the business were James Mee and Arthur Ryan. Long before the days of household refrigeration, ice was big business - in the 20s, there were around 30 ice-makers in Brisbane.
In the early 50s, self-service ice was introduced at Iceworks. This proved to be an enduring hit for many years after.
In 1996, the Mee family took the decision to move their successful ice making business to the south-eastern suburb of Hemmant. Today it continues to prosper.
The Paddington site remained in the Mee family’s hands and has successfully been developed as this new and exciting Paddington Precinct whilst still maintaining its significant history.
